BRPD Chief of Police Responds to Possible White Serial Killer Targeting Black Men, 2 Dead In 2 Days

New reports just released about a manhunt under way for a white male of medium build with a military style haircut who may be wearing a tactical vest. The murders happened on Tuesday and Thursday apparently at random in the capital city. The first shooting took place on Tuesday night. What appeared to be a homeless man was killed at the corner of Acadian and Florida Blvd. between 10:30 and 11:15 p.m. The victim was 59 year old Bruce Cofield.

The second shooting happened Thursday night at the 3400 block of Alaska Street. Donald Smart, 49 was found shot around 11 p.m. his death was under investigation as of Friday morning.

According to The Advocate a national ballistics database has connected the two killings.

Baton Rouge Chief of Police Johnny Dunnam went on the the Face 2 Face radio show hosted by Gary Chambers and John Delgado on Talk 107.3 to discuss the possibility of a serial killer being on the loose in Baton Rouge. Dunnam said, “This is an on going investigation, the details of which we don’t want to get into. It’s kind of irresponsible that The Advocate posted details that we asked that they would not, kind of details in emails between officers in the field. A lot of that information is still preliminary. We aren’t 100% sure on a lot of that information, but it was reported that way.”

When asked are you concerned that we have a possible serial killer in Baton Rouge, Dunnam responded, “Obviously we are concerned that we have two killings that are possibly linked. Its our top priority right now, we have numerous officers out looking searching trying to apprehend the individual, we want to make sure we do everything we can to stop this individual.”

Dunnam was asked what message did he have for African American males in Baton Rouge the chief said, “if you see anything that suspicious make sure you report it. Call crime stoppers or the homicide. Both killings happened at a certain time of night. They need to be aware of their surrounding and any suspicious people that might pull up and talk to them. Right now it’s still preliminary and we’ve got every man and woman out there looking and searching for this individual.”
